Dear Families,
Exciting Maths Opportunity for Years 2–6 Students
We are thrilled to announce that over 45 students from Years 2 to 6 at St John the Baptist School have expressed interest in participating in an exciting mathematics initiative: the MASA Investigating Mathematics Competition!
This state-wide competition, run by the Mathematical Association of South Australia (MASA), invites students to explore real-world problems through a mathematical lens. Participants will select a topic of personal interest, investigate it using mathematical thinking, and present their findings in a creative and structured way.
This initiative is a fantastic opportunity for students to:
- Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Apply maths to real-life situations
- Work independently and collaboratively
- Showcase their creativity and curiosity
The Investigating Mathematics Competition is an extended project, with final submissions due in August. Students will receive support through weekly or fortnightly sessions at school, and they have also committed to completing additional work independently at home.
For more information about the competition, visit the MASA website:
https://masaonline.org.au/invest-with-maths-primary-2025/
We are proud to support our students in this enriching learning experience and look forward to seeing the innovative projects they produce!
Bike Safety
We are thrilled to see so many students riding their bikes to and from school—it’s a fantastic way to stay active and reduce traffic congestion. However, we kindly remind all families that for safety reasons, students must not ride their bikes within the school grounds or in the school car park. Bikes should be walked to and from the designated bike racks to ensure the safety of all students, staff, and visitors. Thank you for your support in discussing this with your children and for keeping our school community safe.
Best Wishes
The Leadership Team

Dear St John’s Community,
We are moving closer towards the end of term, the weeks are starting to wind down, but there are no signs of the Sport opportunities slowing down at all. In the following newsletter piece we celebrate SAPSASA Cross Country Runners, SACPSSA Basketballers, a Surf State Champion and even an Irish Dancer.
As a school we were very proud to have 3 of our long-distance runners qualify for the 2025 SAPSASA State Cross Country Championships. These particular championships were held on Thursday 5th June at the Oakbank Racing Club in the wintry Adelaide Hills. Olivia Sadler (4G), Will Keegan (5F) and Thomas McDonald (6W) all represented both our school and the Airport District with pride by executing their best efforts in challenging conditions.

Olivia competed in the U10 section and completed the race in 10th place. Overall, the U10 Girls Airport District placed 2nd at the Championships. Will competed in the U11 section and was credited with a 10th place finish also. This effort assisted the U11 Boys Airport District to obtain 1st place accolades at the Championship. Thomas competed in the U12 section which had 200+ runners and at the conclusion of the race, he finished in the 76th position. A huge effort when competing against so many runners.
Olivia and Will have both been placed on the reserve list for the SA State Team that travels to QLD in September to compete at a national level. We at St John the Baptist Catholic School are very proud of each of you. You have all shown high levels of commitment, enthusiasm and strength to gain such pleasing results. Not only have you represented yourselves, but you have represented our school in the best possible manner. Congratulations to each of you.
Just last Friday 13th June we entered a Year 5/6 Boys and a Year 5/6 Girls Team of Basketballers to represent SJBCS at the 2025 SACPSSA Basketball Carnival. There were a total of 15 boys teams and 13 girls teams competing at the carnival. The standard of Basketball was quite high and it was very pleasing to see our students work together in their teams to play some very skilful and competitive Basketball. At the end of the rounds both of our teams were in the play-offs for the 7th spot. There were some extremely close games over the day, but overall both of our teams were credited with an 8th place finish each. A huge thanks goes to Adam Gordon, Darren Finneran and Nat Percy who assisted us with the coaching and scorers roles on the day.
Back by popular demand is our Reception – Year 2 Auskick opportunity. The students will all get a taste of what to expect on Monday 30th June here at School when the SANFL Game Development Team come and run an energetic clinic for all of the students in Reception – Year 2. Each of the students will receive a little flyer on this day that will contain a QR code for registration purposes. From this point it will just be up to you as the parents to register your child for the AFL Auskick Clinics that will be taking place on a Monday night during Term 3. Attached to this newsletter piece is the official flyer with all of the relevant details.

It takes quite a bit of hard work, training and skill to find yourself on the top step of the podium amongst your peers. On top of this if you are to become a State Champion at your chosen Sport, this is a whole new level of commitment and determination. That is exactly what Olivia Sadler (4G) has achieved in her chosen sport of Surf Life Saving. We as a school wish to congratulate Olivia on becoming the U9 Surf State Champion. We can’t wait to see what else you achieve in the future.

Louis Taylor (2A) is an extremely polite and quietly confident student who has been Irish Dancing for 2.5 years. Just recently, Louis won his first Premiership event and was awarded a trophy nearly as tall as himself. He attends classes 3 times a week and competes every 3-4 weeks from March through to October. Louis is currently working towards State Championships in August and National Championships in Brisbane in September, where he will compete in both solo and team events. Louis dreams of one day to attending the Worlds, which are held in Ireland and would mostly be excited to board and fly on a giant Emirates plane. Louis has certainly found a passion for dance at such a young age, he also very much enjoys playing Cricket with his friends. What a great achievement Louis, we are very proud of your achievements and encourage you to dream big.

That’s all I have for now, but there will be more to report in my next newsletter piece once we have competed in the SACPSSA Netball Carnival.
Yours in sport

Our Lost Property Box in the front office is overflowing!
Please take a moment to check for any missing items before the end of term.
Please be reminded to put your child's name on their items so we can return them!
This term, we have an exciting program planned, including sensory play, story time, art and craft, and music sessions. We will also continue building on our special intergenerational connections with visits from our older friends in the community.
Playgroup is held every Friday of the school term in the St John the Baptist Centre. New families are always welcome – we would love for you to come along and join the fun!
Words Grow Minds
Play shows us that the simplest of activities all contribute to development and lifelong learning. Take this basic one for example: Let’s Play Ball! ⚽You might think that playing with a ball is a family favourite activity just because it’sfun - but it’s SO MUCH more than that. For babies and toddlers, practicing how to grasp, roll, kick, or chase a ball around are all actions that refine their fine and gross motor skills and introduce concepts like cause-and-effect. Let your child discover just how manythings they can do. What a thrill! Remember, adult supervision is required at all times.

St John the Baptist School provides a safe environment for all while valuing the partnership between school and home.
As a Catholic community, we welcome and value volunteers. To be able to volunteer, and/or attend at other times throughout the school year, we ask that you hold a current Catholic Police Check (parents/caregivers attending excursions, reading in class, helping in class, attending community events), a current Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect in Education and Care for Volunteers certificate and have completed the volunteers application package.
A Catholic Police Check for volunteers is free for our current parents and caregivers. Application Forms are available in our school office.
This process ensures we maintain a child safe environment. To avoid disappointment, we encourage you to apply for a Catholic Police Check through the school office as soon as possible.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at the school office on 8218 3300 or email Julia Roy on jroy@stjohnpl.catholic.edu.au .

Insights may be discussed at future School Advisory Board meetings or you may be contacted personally for further follow up!
